Not All Magnesium Is Created the Same: Why the Form Matters
Magnesium has become a bit of a wellness staple lately.
You’ll find it in supplements, powders and evening routines. Often associated with everything from muscle function to winding down at the end of the day.
But take a closer look at two magnesium products and you might notice something.
The type of magnesium isn’t always the same.
Citrate. Glycinate. Oxide. Gluconate. There are a number of different forms out there, each with slightly different properties.
So, what does the form actually mean...and why did we choose Magnesium Gluconate for Calming Cocoa?
First, What Does Magnesium Actually Do?
Magnesium is an essential mineral your body needs for a whole range of everyday processes.
It supports normal muscle function, including the processes involved in muscle contraction and relaxation. Magnesium is also necessary for normal nervous system function, helping support the communication between your brain and body.
In other words, magnesium isn’t just something to think about at bedtime. Your body relies on it as part of normal everyday function.
And while we often simply call it “magnesium”, the magnesium found in supplements and fortified foods is usually combined with another compound.
That’s where the different forms come in.
So, Are All Forms of Magnesium the Same?
Not quite.
Different forms of magnesium have different chemical properties, including how readily they dissolve, which can influence how magnesium is absorbed by the body.
Some forms you may have come across include:
- Magnesium citrate
- Magnesium glycinate
- Magnesium oxide
- Magnesium chloride
- Magnesium gluconate
That doesn’t necessarily mean there’s one form that’s automatically “best” for everyone. The amount you consume, the overall formulation and other dietary factors can all play a part too.
The takeaway? The word “magnesium” on the front doesn’t tell you the whole story.
Meet Magnesium Gluconate
Magnesium Gluconate is the form of magnesium you’ll find in our Calming Cocoa.
It’s magnesium combined with gluconic acid and is an organic magnesium salt.
When developing Calming Cocoa, we looked at the formula as a whole rather than treating magnesium as a standalone ingredient.
The result? 100mg of Magnesium per serve, paired with 150mg of L-Theanine, rich cocoa and a low-sugar formula...all wrapped up in something you’ll actually look forward to making.
Because sometimes adding something to your routine is a whole lot easier when it tastes like hot chocolate. ☕
Making It Part of Your Evening
So, where does all of that fit into your wind-down?
Magnesium supports normal nervous system and muscle function, exactly the kinds of everyday processes continuing behind the scenes as your body moves from a busy day into a slower evening.
But winding down isn’t about one ingredient.
It might look like closing the laptop, doing your skincare, putting your phone away or simply taking a few quiet minutes before bed.
For us, Calming Cocoa was created to fit into that moment.
Simply add 2 heaped teaspoons to 200ml of hot water or your favourite milk, stir and enjoy.
Or make things a little more indulgent with our Calming Cocoa Hot Chocolate recipe, finished with cinnamon, marshmallows and dark chocolate.
PJs on. Phone down. Cocoa up. 🤎
Final Thoughts
When it comes to magnesium, the form is worth paying attention to.
Different magnesium compounds have different properties, which is why looking beyond the word “magnesium” can help you better understand what’s actually inside the products you’re choosing.
For Calming Cocoa, we chose Magnesium Gluconate as part of a formula made for those slower moments at the end of your day.
No complicated routine required.
Just scoop, pour, unwind...and let calm become Second Nature.
